Project Requirements

The second-storey office measures 9,325 sq. ft. with large windows on either side letting in lots of natural light throughout the day. Exposed dark teal-coloured beams add a unique sense of character to the space.  Mount Lighting’s main focus was harnessing the wonderful natural light and optimising the circadian rhythms for the new tenants within the lighting design, for the open-plan offices.  We were also tasked with creating exciting and inviting reception area lighting.

On our visit to the site, we were struck by the architectural elegance of the original building and the modern, industrial feel of the interior. Knowing that 230 City Road is located right in the centre of London’s tech hub, with established market leaders and cutting-edge start-ups all around, we knew we had to come up with something innovative, efficient, and in keeping with the key features of the space.

The client wanted the lighting design to both fit in with and stand out from what was already there. And at Mount, we thrive on giving our customers what they ask for! This brief presented a challenge in terms of how we were going to lay out the lighting to work with the curved ceiling and beam construction, but our expert team of creative designers and technical engineers were able to devise a solution that met both the client’s requirements and the demands of the space.

We submitted our drawings based on their specifications and supplied lighting fixtures finished in black to contrast with the stark white ceilings and blend in with the striking Teal coloured steel beams and columns. Force Suspended downlights are a popular choice for spaces with high, exposed ceilings. We hung these at strategic points throughout the open-plan area and in the bathrooms to offer a clear, direct path of LED light. Black Suspended Linear M-Line Systems were installed to hang below the beams, creating different levels and offering bright illumination throughout the space. The whole design is brought together by our Halo Suspended luminaires, clean, bold statement pieces that are perfect for lighting large open spaces like the one we had to work with on this project. All lighting supplied is controlled by presence detectors connected to a Flex 7 wiring system to save energy when zones are not in use.

Future tenants and visitors to the offices will benefit from the widespread illumination and impressive coverage, regardless of what the workspace is used for.

The best investment you can make to improve your workplace is through the power of lighting. With efficient and effective LED lighting, you too can have a comfortable and productive environment, as with this case study in London.  Interestingly, The City of London Planning dept has recently consulted on a new supplementary planning document (SPD) which includes a “Considerate Lighting Charter’ urging city developers to light up responsibly, which we at Mount Lighting are behind 100%.  New and refurbished buildings will be required to submit a detailed strategy for how their buildings will be lit to help achieve carbon net zero for the Square Mile by 2040.   The concept of “the right light in the right place, at the right time and with the right controls” is certainly something we at Mount have long been passionate about.  Contact us to see how we can help with your Technical Lighting Design.

Project Conclusion

From the first site visit and initial concept to sign-off on the final design, Mount Lighting was on-hand throughout this project, providing a full lighting design and drawings package. We worked directly with the end client, gaining their approval for our proposal – and we’re pleased to say they were very happy with the end result!

The team is especially proud of the lighting design supplied for 230 City Road because it showcases our work at its best. The systems we provided breathe new life into this old space and highlight the charms of the original building while bringing it up-to-date to meet modern health and safety work regulations and CIBSE standards.

When the second floor is let, we’re sure the incoming tenants will greatly benefit from the superior task lighting and admire the modern, contrasting elements of the design.
